Reflection on Mission, Values & Engagement

1)   Looking at the values which the Sisters of Noter Dame de Namur live by I would say they are not to estranged from my belief system. Growing up and learning about my identity I was able to learn not only which ethical values I myself identify with and live by hut also learned to accommodate other values to fit into mine. The Sisters of NDNU have a value of honoring the dignity of each individual and created a community with those they interact with. These two values go hand in hand with the belief I have, I abide by a belief systems that everyone is equal and have a human rights which should be honored and protected. We are all human beings who rely on one another in some form which means we should always treat each other respect and create bonds to unit us or serve each other when necessary. 2)   Attending NDNU has allowed me to develop relationships that honor the dignity and sacredness of each person or non-human through the Bonner Program. The bonds I have...

Chapter 12 Taxing & Spending

The Community Partner which I am Involved with tends to rely on grants and donations. For grants they do need to apply depending on projects which may be a set back at times. The reason they may be set backs is due to the unfortunate events that if they do not receive the funding necessary they may not be able to go about the project. Another form of money which they rely on is the earning they get from the selling of plants and grasses from their nursery. Through the profits they are able to buy equipment and necessities for their projects. Through the contribution of donations, grants, and the nursery my community partner is able to continue their work with protecting the Eco system of the San Bruno Mountain.

My CP and Their Local Government Structure

Describe the community in which your CP operates… is it a city, a town, a rural area? What kind of mayor does the community have? Does your CP have any interaction with local government officials? My community partner is San Bruno Mountain watch which operates out of the city of San Bruno. San Bruno is located in the San Francisco peninsula pertaining to the San Mateo county. San Bruno became a city in 1914, whose local government consist of five elected city council. Currently the San Bruno Mayor is Jim Ruane, he is on his second term as mayor and has served as a council member since 1995. San Bruno Mountain watch works closly with not only San Mateo government officials but also with those of the surrounding cities which incircle the Mountain. They must work with government officials so that they may ensure protection of the land eligible for development surrounding the Mountain.

State Legislatures

How are California’s State Legislature and/or local governments using their power to preserve state and local values in the face of conflicting Federal policies? California’s State Legislation and its local government always use a lot of their power to preserve the state’s and its local values. Many of the values which many Californians have has been prevalent to the United States for such a long time. After 1988 California has consecutively deemed itself a reliable Democratic state with a large population of minorities within its borders. Since President Donald Trump began to hold office, California has demonstrated just how much they do not agree with much of his policies, especially his immigration reforms. California has been in the works of becoming a sanctuary state which even with the lack of federal money could still be able to maintain itself due to having one of the Sixth largest economies in the world. Even before California, as a state, becomes a sanctuary, many local...

Case Study. Vergara V. California

Find and summarize a case study about an effort to update or challenge a state constitution. Vergara V. California is a lawsuit filed in the California state court in May 2012. The lawsuit challenged California statutes that violated the state constitution. The plaintiffs were nine students from three different school districts. The Districts included the Los Angeles Unified School District, Oakland Unified School District, and the Alum Rock Union School district. The students unified through the help of the non profit organization called Students Matter and by attorneys Theodore B. Olson and Theodore J. Boutrous. They argued that the California State constitution and Jurisprudence guarantees equal educational opportunities but that current tenure, dismissal, and seniority policies create a virtually impossible opportunity to dismiss bad teachers from the education system. These bad teachers have proven costly to the academic gains of students and deprive them of many opportunitie...

Subsidiarity and the Proper Role of Government

Subsidiarity: different levels of government who Assist on another for the greater good of the community. A word phrased by Pope Pius XI to create a distinction between the powerful and the common. When reading Chapter 2 of the book Devolution is described to be “the delegation of power and programs from the federal to state and local governments." which in a way has to do with Subsidiarity as it is a form in which the government is assisting each level of government.   In Kenya their constitution has developed into a devolving constitution allowing for its centralized government to obtain freedom from the strict rules it once faced. The “devolution of Kenya” has allowed for the local governments to actually exercise having a say about their own affairs they are facing. The counties will now be able to coordinate their infrastructure, education, and even their economy is depending on the community rather than the central government. This will benefit each county as they wil...

Citizen Participation

The way a citizen participates within the community has an affect on the community, there are four different types of relationships which a citizen will have when participating within the community. There is loyalty, voice, neglect, and exit. All four lead to different outcomes. I f a citizen neglects to participate in government then many of the laws past may impact them in a negative way due to their lack speaking up. Rather, when a person engages with the community by staying loyal and voicing their opinion then they experience with laws past is much more positive. The site in which I will be doing my community engagement is with the San Bruno Mountain watch. The San Bruno Mountain Watch helps preserve and maintain the habitat on the mountain which is surrounded by about 4 different cities such as Brisbane, San Bruno, Daly City, and a small part of San Francisco. This Mountain was going to be carved down to create more homes for the cities around it as well as the dirt and rocks...

State and Local Government

Why is there tension between the state and the local levels of government? It is well known that within a state the government that holds the power is the state not the local government. With that being said, this unitary system between the state and its localities faces problems when managing both governments with in sharing boundaries. Two of the biggest says that the State government has over the local Governments is how much power it allows the localities to exercises. Many states don't allow localities to exercises much power causing them to share their ordinances and other legislation with the state before allowing the locality to exercise them at first. Other states actually allow their localities to exercise the majority of the power without having to go through the state first. Even with the power exercise the main conflict which they have is finances. Local government rely heavily on state funds. Although the localities can place taxes on estates and roads majority of t...

"Beyond winners & losers, there is a field... I'll meet you there." said by a Persian Poem named Rumi. Basically what this means is that, no matter what, we are going to end up the same and move on beyond our fails and wins because we keep moving forward.
